The Teachers’ Union of Ireland (TUI) has said that if the health advice in relation to the wearing of face coverings in schools does require revision, that must happen without delay as adequate time will be needed to ensure that procurement of the appropriate masks/visors is completed before the re-opening of schools.

Responding to the publication by Government of the document Reopening Our Schools: The Roadmap for The Full Return to School, the Teachers’ Union of Ireland (TUI) has said that health and safety must remain the key priority and that additional resources should be made immediately available if the initial budget does not prove sufficient.    The Union has also said that it expects ongoing and intensive engagement with the Department to address arising issues and matters that have yet to be finalised.    Comments from TUI President Martin Marjoram:

The decision of the Minister for Education and Skills to grant Technological University Status to the TU Consortium made up of Cork Institute of Technology and Institute of Technology Tralee has both regional and national implications   The members of the Teachers’ Union of Ireland (TUI) in Cork Institute of Technology and the Institute of Technology Tralee have been central to the development of a model of higher education provision that will work best for students and the broader community that they serve.   However, as the Minister notes, there remains a range of industrial relations matters that require resolution. He states that particular focus should be maintained in ‘further engagement with staff representatives to resolve outstanding industrial relations issues before the appointed day of establishment.’   These matters must now be addressed as a matter of urgency. The TUI stands ready to engage with management of the Institutes to negotiate resolutions that honour the Memorandum of Understanding agreed between the Union and the Institutes. It would seem entirely reasonable to expect a similar level of commitment by the two Institutes.

At a meeting of its Executive Committee this evening, the Teachers’ Union of Ireland (TUI) decided to engage with the system of Calculated Grades outlined by the Minister today. The Union had engaged extensively with the other education stakeholders in relation to the state examinations. While the clear preference of the TUI had been that the written examinations would proceed in July/August, regrettably this has proved to be not possible. At all times, the health and safety of students, teachers and the wider public had to be and was the main consideration. It became increasingly clear that physical and practical requirements in the context of the current health emergency meant that the holding of the written and practical examinations was not feasible.

A new survey of over 130 second level schools illustrates worsening teacher recruitment and retention difficulties across the country. The poll of over a sixth of the total number of the country’s second level schools was carried out in December 2019 and January 2020 by the Principals’ and Deputy Principals’ Association of the Teachers’ Union of Ireland (TUI).
