Imminent increase in student numbers shows need for urgent, targeted funding at second level – TUI

The Teachers’ Union of Ireland (TUI) today said that projections which show a significant increase in student numbers at second level in the coming years make clear the need for greatly increased, targeted investment in the sector.   Speaking today, TUI General Secretary Michael Gillespie said:  ‘There is nothing hypothetical about these figures – the increase in student numbers at second level due to demographic trends will have been known by our policymakers for some time.   It is therefore even more unacceptable that the latest OECD figures reveal Ireland’s spend at second level to be the lowest of the 36 countries for which figures are provided. This illustrates a shameful and sustained lack of acknowledgement by Government of the value of education to the individual, to society and to our economy.   Schools will clearly require additional teaching allocations, but there is already a teacher supply crisis as a result of pay discrimination which sees those who started from 2011 onwards earning less than colleagues. A survey of principals around the country carried out in August shows that 98% of schools have experienced difficulties employing substitute teachers over the past twelve months, with 81% of respondents believing that pay discrimination is a significant factor in this. These problems will continue until this inequality is eliminated.   In addition, the current pandemic has put the unsuitability of many second level school buildings to appropriately serve the needs of modern school communities in sharp focus. In this regard, a commitment to greatly enhanced capital investment by Government is a necessity.’

Minister must provide certainty and confirm that customary State examinations will take place – TUI

By piofficer 09 Nov 2020 | 0 comments
The Teachers’ Union of Ireland (TUI) has said that if the priority of Government is to keep schools open during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Union will not countenance or accept any attempt not to hold the traditional, highly trusted, externally-marked State Examinations in 2021. The Union notes recent comments by the Minster that the intention is that ‘the Leaving Certificate 2021 will be the traditional Leaving Certificate as we would know it.’ This must now be confirmed.

TUI support for Debenhams workers

By piofficer 06 Nov 2020 | 0 comments
The Teachers’ Union of Ireland (TUI) extends its support to the Debenhams workers who are being unfairly denied the implementation of a collectively negotiated redundancy package.   We echo the call of Mandate trade union for immediate, definitive action from the Taoiseach and the Government to end the protracted dispute which has seen workers on picket lines for over 200 days.   We also fully support the demand of Mandate and the ICTU that legislation be implemented to give effect to the Duffy/Cahill report which could prevent other workers suffering a similar scenario in the future.

After several enquiries from members, to the effect that the November examinations have been cancelled, the TUI contacted the State Examinations Commission(SEC) who have categorically refuted such an assertion. The SEC confirmed to the TUI that the Government has set out that the measures which came into effect, under Level 5 on the Government’s Plan for Living with COVID-19, on 21 October for 6 weeks, are being taken to protect national priorities and this includes keeping schools open.
