First group of TUI members graduate with Certificate in Trade Union Studies

Eighteen TUI members from all sectors of the union recently graduated with a Certificate in Trade Union Studies. The online course was run in partnership with City of Glasgow College, which has extensive experience in providing training for union representatives. The course was delivered by Assistant General Secretary John O’Reilly in conjunction with Scott McCabe and Mark Pollitt of The City of Glasgow College Trade Union Centre. The course was delivered through both face-to-face and online learning, offering a high standard of training to members which will enable them to understand how a trade union works.

Calculated Grades - Information for members

As you will be aware, the Minister for Education and Skills announced the postponement of the 2020 Leaving Certificate on Friday, with students to be offered the option of receiving Calculated Grades for the subjects they are studying and the alternative of sitting the 2020 Leaving Certificate examinations.

TUI to engage with Calculated Grades but system must be fair and equitable and professional integrity of teachers must be protected

At a meeting of its Executive Committee this evening, the Teachers’ Union of Ireland (TUI) decided to engage with the system of Calculated Grades outlined by the Minister today. The Union had engaged extensively with the other education stakeholders in relation to the state examinations. While the clear preference of the TUI had been that the written examinations would proceed in July/August, regrettably this has proved to be not possible. At all times, the health and safety of students, teachers and the wider public had to be and was the main consideration. It became increasingly clear that physical and practical requirements in the context of the current health emergency meant that the holding of the written and practical examinations was not feasible.
