World Teachers' Day

Every year on 5th October, the TUI participates in World Teachers’ Day, an important celebration of, and tribute to, the world’s educators. It is a time to acknowledge all that you do and the vital role that you play in educating and unleashing the potential of the students you encounter throughout your career.

Theme for 2022

It is apt that the theme for this year is “Leading in crisis, reimagining the future.” We are all too aware of the difficulties faced by students, teachers, and lecturers throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, but you rose to the challenge and showed leadership and resilience in the most difficult of circumstances. You led, and continue to lead in your workplaces, constantly putting the student to the fore, doing all that you could and can, to maintain and sustain the provision of education to thousands. Reimagining the future, however, is a much more difficult task. As educators we often reimagine our circumstances, and more often than not, we see a future where our colleagues have proper contracts, where education is adequately funded, where pay equality is a given, where new entrants receive jobs, not hours and a career where there is a realistic opportunity for progression. The TUI is currently working on these issues, working to create a reimagined future where the voice of the professional is valued and considered and where it is central to the future, a future we create together.

Celebrate the Profession

So, on World Teachers’ Day, it is important also to celebrate the profession and our enormous contribution to society. World Teachers’ Day promotes the ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers (1966) and the UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Higher Education Teaching Personnel (1997). Take the opportunity to celebrate all that you do, it is deserved.

How to mark the occasion?

The 5th of October is an important day and as an acknowledgement of its importance – and yours – in promoting and sustaining the TUI’s core values of justice and inclusion, the members of the TUI in schools, colleges, institutes, technological universities, and centres are encouraged to mark the day with the purchase of refreshments for members. The cost of purchase can be recouped from the local branch by submitting receipts directly to the TUI Branch Treasurer.
Enjoy the occasion and thank you for your commitment to your students and their education.
