This week, the Department of Education is issuing via direct email to schools an invitation to participate in the Survey of Unmet Demand 2023/2024. The purpose of this annual survey is to collect information on the subjects for which schools could not fill vacancies for the 2023/2024 academic year.

"As you are aware, the Survey of Unmet Demand serves as a pivotal tool for gathering essential information on the subjects for which schools faced difficulties in filling vacancies during the 2023/2024 academic year. The data collected through this survey enables us to gain valuable insights into the challenges faced by educational institutions, facilitating a comprehensive understanding of the landscape of teacher demand and shortages.

For example, using information for the survey of unmet demand 2022/2023, additional financial supports were given to specific teaching training programmes to expand their offerings on high pressure subjects.

The survey is hosted by the European Commission survey portal, is available in English and Irish, and can be accessed at the following link: https://ec.europa.eu/eusurvey/runner/UnmetDemandSurvey_2023.

The survey should take no more than 10 minutes to complete, depending on the levels of unmet demand that need to be recorded. We will remind schools over the period that the survey is open (until 1 March) to participate, but we would be grateful for your cooperation in encouraging schools to meet this deadline."
