New TUI President, Vice-President and Assistant General Secretaries - New President David Waters was inspired to become a Union activist by injustice of pay discrimination

David Waters begins his term as TUI President today. A native of Dublin, he commenced his teaching career in Greenhills College in Dublin in 2012, teaching English and History as a ‘new entrant’ to the profession, earning less than his longer-serving colleagues for carrying out the same work due to the cuts inflicted by Government.

He became a Union activist from the start of his career, serving the school, branch and Union in a variety of roles, most recently that of Vice-President. Throughout this time, he was to the fore in the Union’s campaign to redress the damage of pay discrimination, highlighting the injustice in a number of public fora.

‘I first became involved in the Union to end pay discrimination,’ David says. ’I can honestly say that becoming active in my branch was one of the best decisions I ever made. It not only improved me as a teacher but also gave me an outlet to effect real change within the sector. I look forward to representing the interests of members across the sectors in which we represent members.’

Sincere thanks are extended to outgoing President Liz Farrell on her achievements during her term of office, and also to Martin Marjoram, whose term of office as Past President ends and who served the Union with such distinction.

Liz takes up her new role as Assistant General Secretary with the Union today following a selection process to employ two permanent positions of Assistant General Secretary with the TUI which was publicly advertised in May 2023. Therefore, in accordance with rule, Vice-President David Waters assumes the role of President from today. Eoin Griffin, who had been employed in an Assistant General Secretary role with the Union on a fixed-term basis, was the other successful applicant and is now employed in a permanent role.

Subsequently, Area 2 Representative Vivienne Keenan was elected acting Vice-President by the Union’s Executive Committee in accordance with Rule 40. An election will now take place to fill the Area 2 position on the Executive Committee.

Declan Glynn and Seamus Lahart are retiring from their Assistant General Secretary roles. Both are thanked for their sterling work on behalf of members.

This week also marked Breda Hall’s last day in TUI Head Office after over 40 years distinguished service to the Union. As so many members past and present will know, Breda was a huge asset to the TUI with a remarkable knowledge of all aspects of the Union’s work. Breda will be replaced in her role by Liz Daly.

Further tribute to all retirees will be paid in a future edition of TUI News.

Best wishes are extended to all in their new roles and in their retirements.
