The Teachers’ Union of Ireland (TUI) has congratulated students on their Leaving Certificate results and advised them to look at continuing their education in areas that they are passionate about.

With many choosing to commence studies that will ultimately see them entering the teaching profession, TUI has reiterated its commitment to securing equal pay for all teachers.

The union has also highlighted the wide breadth of courses available in Further Education colleges around the country.

Speaking today, TUI President Joanne Irwin congratulated students on the ‘dedication and determination shown in achieving their results.’

‘However, it is important to emphasise today that these exams will not define the lives of students. If they did not receive the results that they had hoped for, there will always be other avenues and opportunities to pursue their chosen course.’

‘They should continue their studies in areas that they are passionate about rather than basing decisions on where employment prospects seem plentiful at a particular moment in time. In addition to third level options, students should consider the wide breadth of choices in Further Education/Post Leaving Certificate (PLC) colleges around country. These courses provide vital skills while also allowing students to progress to further education and training. Students should also consider the wide range of apprenticeships available across a range of areas.’

‘Special tribute should be paid to mature students who took the brave decision to return to education to take the exams. Also, there are many students receiving results today who only have acquired English relatively recently.’

‘Too often, the role of parents and guardians is forgotten about today.  Their unwavering support and encouragement over several years is to be commended.’

‘Meanwhile, Irish teachers work longer hours than international averages, demonstrating commitment and innovation on a daily basis in providing a first class education service to students of all abilities.‘

Equal pay for equal work

‘Another cohort of students will take a step towards becoming teachers themselves today. The principle of equal pay for equal work remains TUI’s key priority. The profession must remain attractive if it is to continue to attract the best graduates.’

‘In a national ballot of members at the start of the school year, the union will seek a strong rejection of the latest public service agreement as it does not resolve this unacceptable inequality.’
