The Teachers’ Union of Ireland (TUI) today stated described the latest Chief Inspector’s Report as an endorsement of the work of teachers.
‘These findings are extremely positive and endorse the excellent quality of teaching in Irish post-primary schools, with overall evaluations of the quality of learning even higher than in the previous edition of the report,’ a spokesman said.
‘The OECD’s Government At A Glance report last year also confirmed high levels of public confidence in the Irish education system, with 83% expressing their satisfaction compared to the international average of 67%.’
‘However, this high standing is being put at risk by a continuing system of pay inequality.’
‘Pay inequality is undermining the profession and corroding staff morale, leading to a crisis in the recruitment and retention of teachers. This is leading to extreme difficulties in the recruitment and retention of teachers across a growing range of subjects. Unless and until this is urgently addressed, service to students will be impaired.
