Urgent engagement required on move which would push education workers down the prioritisation list

The Teachers’ Union of Ireland (TUI) has expressed serious concern over reports this evening about changes to the vaccination roll-out programme. The Union is seeking urgent engagement with the Department of Education on the matter.

Comments from TUI General Secretary Michael Gillespie:

“We believe that the reported changes to the system of vaccination roll-out would put many essential education workers further down the prioritisation list at a time when the Government’s stated key objective is to fully re-open schools in a safe and sustainable manner which commands the confidence of the school community.

This development has arrived without warning or consultation.

We are seeking further clarification and urgent engagement with the Department of Education on this issue.

It is also important to state that TUI’s position is that the most vulnerable in society, including the elderly and those with underlying health issues, should be prioritised for vaccination in the first instance.”
