The Teachers’ Union of Ireland (TUI), which passed a motion at Annual Congress 2018 expressing solidarity with the Rohingya people, is gravely concerned by the actions of the Myanmar government and military in Rakhine state as detailed in the United Nations report 28th August 2018.
The report provides shocking evidence of widespread murder, torture, rape and expulsion the Rohingya people from their homes and land. Over 700,000 Rohingyas have fled to refugee camps in Bangladesh in fear of their lives. Following the release of the report, the United Nations General Secretary has called for ‘the country’s (Myanmar) military leaders to be investigated and prosecuted for genocide and war crimes.’
TUI calls on the Irish government to immediately condemn the actions of the Myanmar regime and to seek support from the European Union for intervention to stop the genocide.
TUI President Seamus Lahart stated: ‘The United Nations report contains evidence of horrific and inhumane actions by the Myanmar military against the Rohingya people. TUI Annual Congress 2018 passed a motion of solidarity with the Rohingya people.
The union continues to work closely with Rohingya Action Ireland and participated in the Rohingya Genocide Remembrance Day held last Saturday in Carlow College. As a mark of respect for those murdered by the Myanmar regime and in solidarity with the Rohingya people, TUI will fly the Rohingya flag at our head office for seven days.'
TUI supports the Rohingya Action Ireland campaign to stop the genocide, provide protection, have stolen land returned and secure respect for the identity of the Rohingya people.
