TUI establishes Covid-19 Support Fund for those most affected by pandemic and makes €20,000 opening contribution

It is evident from social media postings and from contacts with Branches and with this office that many members of the Union wish to make a practical contribution on a voluntary basis to alleviate the hardship and distress being caused by the Covid-19 public health emergency.

Specifically, members have requested that we put in place a mechanism through which they could make a financial donation to assist those most affected by the current pandemic i.e. the elderly, the recently unemployed, the homeless and other marginalised groups.

Therefore, the TUI has set up a ‘GoFundMe’ account to which members may donate. ‘GoFundMe’ is a reputable service. It applies a minimal transaction fee of 2.9% plus $0.30 per donation, which covers credit card processing and the secure transfer of funds.

GoFundMe is funded entirely by donors. Donors to our campaign may choose to give GoFundMe a voluntary tip during the donation process. These tips enable GoFundMe to maintain and improve the free platform. The TUI will make an appropriate donation to support the platform.

The TUI:

  • has made an opening contribution of €20,000 to the account.

  • will, as and when appropriate, withdraw funds from the account and make donations to Irish Registered Charities working with those affected by the Covid-19 pandemic e.g. the St. Vincent de Paul, Alone, Focus Ireland, Pieta House, the Peter McVerry Trust etc. These charities have the network and infrastructure to ensure that monies collected are used to greatest effect.

  • will supply members with regular updates on the level of donations to and contributions from the fund.

The TUI believes that operating through existing registered and reputable charities is the best, most prudent and cost-effective approach.

The TUI has put this facility for members in place as an immediate response to the desire of our members to offer meaningful assistance to those in our society who are in most urgent need as a consequence of the Covid-19 emergency.

We would invite and encourage you, the members of the Union, to donate to this fund insofar as your personal circumstances allow.
