Students must not lose out due to Leaving Cert results date – TUI

Responding to Minister Foley’s announcement that this year’s Leaving Certificate results will issue on 3rd September, the Teachers’ Union of Ireland (TUI) has said the relevant Departments must ensure that no student in the class of 2021, including those who may be looking at further study options outside the State, should lose out due to the timeline.

Speaking this evening, TUI General Secretary Michael Gillespie said:

‘We note the announcement of the Minister this evening in relation to the release of the Leaving Certificate results later this year. In this regard, it is essential that no student would lose out in terms of further study options as a result of the timeline, including those who may be applying for options outside the State. We trust that the relevant Government departments will, where necessary, liaise with international counterparts to ensure that this has absolutely no negative impact.’

Two systems of assessment running in parallel

‘On a strictly ‘no precedent’ basis, Irish teachers are facilitating two systems of assessment in parallel – with the significant resulting additional workload – to ensure that that the class of 2021 does not lose out as a result of the disruption to learning caused by the move to remote teaching necessitated by the pandemic.’

Students should not expose themselves to risk ahead of written exams

‘We once again urge those students sitting the written examinations from 9th June onwards to exercise additional caution in the days and weeks ahead so that they do not expose themselves to the risk of COVID-19 infection.

Final year students have worked unbelievably hard over this academic year in circumstances that would have been unimaginable eighteen months ago. They have displayed great resilience throughout a period of time that has often been extremely stressful.’
