Pay equality key to promotion of STEM subjects

Commenting on today's STEM Education Policy Statement launch by the Department of Education and Skills, TUI warned that pay equality is a prerequisite if the education system is to continue to attract the best graduates.

‘A necessary first step in the promotion of any subject or groups of subjects in Irish schools is the restoration of pay equality for those employed since 2011,' said TUI President Joanne Irwin.

'A high quality teaching profession is a prerequisite for a high quality education service, yet it has become extremely difficult for schools to source teachers in certain subjects, including in the STEM area, when there are more lucrative and secure employment options elsewhere. Some progress has been made, but in order to ensure that the profession continues to attract graduates of the highest calibre, completion of the process of pay equalisation must be accelerated.’
