Changes to Career Break Scheme 

An Information Note titled ‘Temporary changes to the Career Break Scheme for Registered Teachers employed in Recognised Primary and Post Primary Schools - 2024/25 School Year’ was published on the Department’s website -  download note from here.
 
This Information Note informs you that restrictions imposed in the Career Break Scheme regarding substitute teaching are suspended for the 2024/25 school year. Under the Career Break Scheme, a teacher on Career Break may be employed in exceptional circumstances, in a substitute teaching capacity, subject to a maximum of (a) 90 days in a school year at primary level and (b) 300 hours in a school year at post primary level.  However, for the 2024/25 school year, a teacher who is on a Career Break may be employed in a substitute capacity without any limits applied.    

Changes to Job Sharing Scheme
 
Separately, an information note titled ‘Temporary changes to the Job Sharing Scheme for Registered Teachers employed in Recognised Primary and Post Primary Schools - 2024/25 School Year’  was published on the Departments website -  download note from here.
 
The restriction of engaging in substitute teaching imposed in the Job Sharing Scheme  as contained in Chapter 8 (Paragraph 11.1(a)) of Circular 54/2019 was suspended for the 2021/22, 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 school years and will also be suspended for the 2024/2025 school year.
 
Under this Information Note, for the 2024/25 school year, a Job Sharing teacher may be employed to work in a substitute capacity in any school, during the period they are rostered off duty.
