Protest over FEMPI Bill outside Dáil at 4pm today

From 4pm on Wednesday, November 18th, members of the Teachers’ Union of Ireland (TUI) will protest outside Dáil Éireann on the afternoon that the Financial Emergency Measures in the Public Interest Bill (FEMPI) 2015 is being finalised.

Details of a pre-general election campaign will be outlined at a press conference before the protest.

TUI believes the Bill is draconian and that it seeks to force unions into the Lansdowne Road Agreement (LRA).

The overwhelming vote of TUI members not to accept the LRA in October by a margin of 92% was due in large measure to the fact that the LRA is utterly oblivious of:

  • The crisis of low hours and low pay among young teachers/lecturers
  • Institute of Technology lecturing hours remaining far in excess of international norms and
  • The continuing bureaucratisation of teaching and lecturing at the expense of students
