Process must confirm end to pay discrimination

The Teachers’ Union of Ireland (TUI) notes today’s Government report on the cost of and the plan for dealing with pay equalisation, which arose out of an amendment to the Public Service Pay and Pensions Act 2017.

Today’s report states that there will now be consultation with the relevant unions through the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU). In its engagements in this regard, TUI will make clear that pay discrimination must be ended as a matter of urgency. We believe that the core issue and its solution are straightforward enough that a lengthy period of consultation will not be required.

Pay discrimination is corroding the morale of teachers and lecturers and damaging the education service, resulting in increasingly severe difficulties in terms of recruitment and retention of staff. These issues will worsen until such time as pay equality is achieved.
