TUI again calls for immediate ceasefire in Middle East - members encouraged to attend demonstration tomorrow

By piofficer 17 Nov 2023 | 0 comments
A reminder that TUI is encouraging members to attend a demonstration tomorrow, Saturday 18th November, against the ongoing violence in Gaza. The demonstration assembles at the Garden of Remembrance in Dublin 1 at 1pm and proceeds to Merrion Square.  The TUI reiterates our position set out on 20th October that a ceasefire must immediately be declared and a humanitarian corridor established. We support the United Nations and international human rights organisations in their critical efforts to deliver urgent supplies to the people of Gaza and to secure the release of hostages. We join Education International, United Nations agencies and human rights organisations in condemning the disproportionate and indiscriminate use of force in Gaza, wherein civilian populations and buildings have been subject to direct targeting.   Click here for an ICTU statement which issued this week. The teacher recruitment and retention crisis in Irish second level schools is worsening, according to the findings of a new survey carried out in over 100 schools by the Principals’ and Deputy Principals’ Association of the Teachers’ Union of Ireland (TUI).   TUI is calling for immediate action to ensure that schools can continue to put teachers in front of classes and that students have access to the full breadth of subjects. Secure jobs of full hours and career progression opportunities are essential to tackle the crisis.     The survey of principals and deputy principals in 104 second level schools was carried out in September and October this year and represents a strong sample of the sector’s approximately 730 schools.

Over the past 12 months the Teachers’ Union of Ireland (TUI) and the Association of Secondary Teachers in Ireland (ASTI) have been engaging in extensive discussions around the prospect of unification. We have held several meetings including four, so far, this academic year. Both unions have engaged constructively and in good faith. We have examined both unions’ rule books and a potential structure for a new education union. There remains a considerable amount of work to be done.

Don't miss out - climate change course for TUI members

By piofficer 01 Nov 2023 | 0 comments
Globally, climate events are now accelerating at pace-heatwaves, floods and droughts are becoming more severe, from North America to Africa to Asia, and everywhere in between. The effects are now clear to see. Here in Ireland, we are not immune to global heating. We cannot afford to ignore the very real challenges the crisis will bring: from the wholesale decarbonising of our economy towards renewable energy systems, to restoring biodiversity, implementing a just transition and building a more equitable society and, most importantly of all, creating a sustainable world for future generations.
