The discussions between representatives from the Department of Education and Skills and the teacher unions - the ASTI and TUI - on the issue of Junior Cycle reform continued today for a number of hours.

The talks have been adjourned without agreement.

The Department side has asked the independent chairperson Dr Pauric Travers to reflect on discussions which took place on Thursday last week and today and to prepare, for the consideration by both sides, a proposal that he believes would provide a fair and equitable basis for progress.

The ASTI and TUI have stated that they will bring this suggested course of action to their respective executive bodies on Friday, February 6th.

The Minister has indicated her willingness to consider any proposal from Dr Travers and it is anticipated that talks may resume early next week.

No further comment will be made by the parties at this stage.
