John MacGabhann appointed next TUI General Secretary

The executive committee of the Teachers’ Union of Ireland (TUI) this morning ratified the appointment of John MacGabhann as the next General Secretary of the union.

Mr MacGabhann will take over the position from Peter MacMenamin, who is due to retire later this year.

A native of Clonmel, Co Tipperary, Mr MacGabhann studied in UCD before teaching English and Irish at Tallaght Community School. He held a number of TUI elected offices while teaching including school representative, branch officer and area representative.

He later held the positions of Honorary Secretary and Vice President and served as President of TUI from 2000 to 2002.

In February 2003 Mr MacGabhann was appointed Education and Research Officer with TUI and became Assistant General Secretary in July 2006.

TUI represents over 15,000 members in second level schools, colleges of further education and Institutes of Technology.
