TUI welcomes Labour's commitment to tackling disadvantage

(17 Feb 2011)

The Teachers’ Union of Ireland (TUI) this afternoon welcomed several specific measures outlined in Labour’s education plan.

TUI General Secretary Peter MacMenamin said:

“TUI members work among the most disadvantaged in Irish communities on a daily basis and have an acute understanding of the inequalities in our education system.

We welcome the measures announced today as they are consistent with TUI’s ongoing campaign to protect those worst affected by cutbacks and the current economic situation.

Labour’s commitment to reintroduce 250 teaching posts in areas where disadvantage is most acute would be a first step in the right direction towards addressing the damage that has been wreaked on the most vulnerable in our education system over the last three years.

In addition, their vow to reverse the €200 charge for PLC courses and also the €500 increase in the third level Student Services Charge will remove major disincentives preventing learners of all ages from furthering their education.”
