Peter MacMenamin, General Secretary of the union said he was “very disappointed” with the Department’s position.

“While reaffirming our opposition to the Croke Park Agreement, last weekend’s conference also affirmed that TUI would respond to any proposal for change through the normal industrial relations machinery. It is regrettable that the Department appears to have now rejected this approach.”

Meanwhile, as a result of the differing attitudes of TUI and ASTI to the industrial action which has been in place on a joint basis in second level schools, a number of queries have been received in relation to the wishes of some members to switch from one union to another. The matter has been raised with ICTU and it has advised that its policy in relation to the switching of members is that no transfer should be allowed in either direction during a period of indusrial strife.
