TUI Rejects Croke Park Proposal

By TUI, Friday, 21st May 2010 | 0 comments

TUI membership has emphatically rejected the proposed “Public Service Agreement 2010-2014”.   The voting figures are as follows:

                                                NO                  75   %

                                                YES                 25   %

In this rejection the members have followed the lead given by the Executive Committee and by TUI Annual Congress and have voted overwhelmingly in accordance with the recommendation of both Congress and the Executive Committee.  A margin of 3:1 is a resounding endorsement of the rejection initiated by the Executive Committee.

The full result is:

Total number eligible to vote                                14,097

Total number of votes cast                                   10,222

Invalid votes                                                             140

Total valid votes                                                  10,082

Votes in favour of the proposed agreement         2,528

Votes against the proposed agreement       7,554

The principal reason for the rejection is the open-ended demand for renegotiation of contracts of both second level teachers and third level lecturers together with the demand for an additional hour in both cases.

The Executive Committee of TUI will consider the result at a meeting today and will vote according to the ballot result at the forthcoming meeting of the Public Services Committee of ICTU.

TUI has in the past indicated that it will not feel itself bound by any majority decision taken by the Public Services Committee, particularly in relation to issues concerning conditions of service.   This position is reiterated today.
