Appalled at Further Curtailment of Higher Education
(16 Mar 2009)
TUI today expressed its opposition to the proposals in respect of so called rationalisation of Higher Education as reported in today’s Irish Independent.
The union has on a number of occasions stated that education is one of the keys to economic recovery in that it is internationally regarded that a highly educated workforce is essential to the economy. Any cutting of access to Higher Education is both short sighted and counter productive. Higher Education in this country – is already seriously underfunded, particularly in the IOT sector.
TUI has today written the both the HEA and to the Department of Education and Science in regard to this matter and will be expressing its views strongly to both bodies.
Any forced redundancies or job losses will be resisted by the union and it is the policy of the union that compulsory redundancies would immediately lead to a ballot for strike action.
