On Wednesday, 5th May, TUI received a clarification of one element of the proposed “Public Service Agreement” in respect of second level teachers.
This clarification was not sought by TUI and the Union has been advised that no further clarification on the education sector provisions is being provided.
The clarification is in respect of the statement on page 7 of the booklet containing the proposals which states:
“A comprehensive review and revision of the teaching contract to identify and remove any impediments to the provision of efficient and effective teaching to students in all sectors.”
The clarification offered in respect of this by letter from the Department of Education reads as follows:
"I can confirm that the primary focus of the contract review will be to ensure full availability of the required class contact hours and 167 days at second level/183 days at primary level for the delivery of tuition while providing for those activities and functions integral to the functioning of the school (eg school planning and continuous professional development) without intrusion upon tuition time."
On Thursday, 6th May, clarification on the overall pay and pensions document was issued by the LRC facilitators to all unions.
These clarifications are not seen as making a significant change in the proposals and do not affect the Executive’s recommendation which is to vote to reject the proposals.
Please bring this information to the attention of members particularly in the light of recent media speculation that this might affect the Union’s vote.
