Alleviation will barely stick a plaster over damage already inflicted

(06 Jul 2010)
Measures announced today to alleviate the loss of posts of responsibility do not go far enough, the Teachers’ Union of Ireland (TUI) today stated.

Responding this afternoon, union General Secretary Peter MacMenamin said:

“This small alleviation will barely stick a plaster over the severe damage already inflicted by the Government on the education system. Posts of responsibility provide students with a vital support network in schools, assisting the most vulnerable in the system.

Management structures of schools have effectively been dismantled by this moratorium and the situation grows progressively worse with each loss of a post through a retirement. This alleviation will fall far short of clawing back the estimated 700 Assistant Principal posts lost since the introduction of this slash and burn policy, and students will continue to suffer.

Most galling of all, it appears to make no allowance for schools which operate in the most disadvantaged communities in the country. Schools will face chaos in September in attempting to deal with this unacceptable deficit.”
